Venus Lessons in Valuing Health: Learning from an Eight-Year Cycle
A Venus Retrograde Story
Navigating Life's Rhythms: Understanding Recurring Cycles
Life often unfolds in patterns, and while some cycles are obvious, others require a closer look to discern. One fascinating astrological cycle to observe is the approximately eight-year pattern associated with Venus. In astrology, Venus is often linked to our values, what we hold dear, and what we find pleasurable and important. This celestial rhythm offers a unique lens through which to understand recurring themes and potential turning points in our lives, particularly as they relate to our health and well-being, our truest form of wealth.
For some, these eight-year junctures can highlight similar areas of focus or even present comparable challenges such as a relationship change. Consider, for example, the years 2017 and 2025 in which Venus went Retrograde in Aries. For individuals attuned to a repetition of this Venusian cycle, these years might have brought a revisiting of certain themes or issues in the recent time period. However, the experience of these recurring patterns isn't necessarily a carbon copy. Instead, it offers an opportunity for growth and a chance to navigate similar terrain with greater awareness and wisdom gained from past experiences.
The passage of time and the lessons learned can significantly influence how we engage with these recurring cycles. What might have felt like a crisis in the initial phase can be met with more resilience or a proactive approach in the subsequent iteration. This increased awareness can empower us to make conscious choices that lead to more favorable outcomes. Retrogrades also often offer opportunities to redo or complete processes that were not completed before.
Imagine recognizing that an upcoming period might bring a familiar set of circumstances. Armed with this knowledge, one can proactively adjust lifestyle, prioritize self-care, and make decisions that support well-being. This isn't about predicting the future with absolute certainty, but rather about understanding potential influences and making informed choices to navigate them more effectively.
By observing these longer cycles, we can gain a broader perspective on our life's journey. We can learn to anticipate potential periods of intensity and proactively cultivate the resources and mindset needed to navigate them with greater ease and grace. Recognizing these rhythms can be a powerful tool for personal growth and for making intentional choices that enhance our overall well-being.
Recognizing the Eight-Year Venus Cycle
I experienced the benefit of this foresight personally this April as the eight-year Venus Retrograde in Aries cycle manifested in a tangible way in regards to my health. A natal stellium in Aries with Venus, Sun, and Moon meant that the Venus Retrograde was of special interest this year. Looking back, I easily connected the circumstances of significant health challenges that I faced in 2017. During this retrograde period in April 2025, shortly before the Peaceful Planet Retreat that I attended in Houston I experienced the second worst health crisis of my life. What was striking was the clear resonance between the themes and the nature of the issues that arose during these two periods. It wasn’t just revisiting, but re-living the themes in new ways. I experienced two different but related health crises as an echo across time, highlighting the profound value of health and the values that inform my philosophy of life and how I choose to care for my health going forward.
In 2017, amidst the demands of raising three school-aged children and navigating my husband's frequent travel for work, I was often sleep deprived and chronically stressed. A co-worker noticed I was "off" due to extreme sleep loss and exhaustion, exacerbated by a long history of Interstitial Cystitis, and undiagnosed joint pain. This culminated in a disorienting emergency room visit and hospital stay where I felt powerless and unable to advocate for myself. The recovery from that episode took nearly a year, both physically and emotionally and left some emotional scars. That experience taught me profound lessons about the necessity of respecting my body's needs for rest, self-care, and nourishment, reinforcing the understanding that our health is an invaluable asset. In short, since then my philosophy has become “health is wealth.”
Fast forward to 2025, my children are all young adults now, and I have much more freedom to care for my own physical needs. After a fun evening out with my husband and some new friends we both contracted Covid. After recovering from the initial symptoms, a similar pattern of "being off" emerged when I tried to return to work. Recognizing the potential for sleep deprivation to trigger to cascading other symptoms reminiscent of 2017, my family and I were more attuned to the early warning signs and were prepared to act. While I did experience a combination of physical and mental symptoms that led to a brief hospitalization, the journey through this new health challenge was markedly different. I was better able to allow myself ample recovery time and reorientation.
Having navigated a similar situation eight years prior, I also possessed more self-compassion and was able to draw upon all of these lessons. Moreover, my recent transition to a plant-based diet, inspired by Dr. Brooke Goldner and the Peaceful Planet Retreat I attended just days after my hospital discharge, likely contributed significantly to a faster and smoother recovery. Goldner’s inspiring book, Goodbye Lupus, offers further insights into her protocol and approach. In 2025, my recovery was notably quicker, and I also experienced healing of the lingering emotional trauma that I still carried with me about the initial health crisis in 2017. This filled me with such gratitude and sense of renewal and hope about the future.
This personal experience underscored for me the potential value of understanding these longer astrological cycles and the value of knowing the nature of a personal Venus cycle (or any astrological cycle) might carry a higher likelihood of repeating significant events that occurred before. In my case, knowing about the Venus placement from eight years before and what the event was linked to in my biography allowed me to make proactive choices to improve my health long before this April arrived.
Shortly after my episode in 2017 I changed jobs to one that offered health insurance and more financial stability. I began making more traditional wellness appointments with physicians and getting more routine preventative care. I invested in my own self-care through private, holistic and alternative health practitioners as well. I took up swimming and joined a gym, and I so during that whole eight year period I had been actively keeping up with my health concerns and following up on anything that arose.
This January I started transitioning to a 100% plant-based diet. I believe all of these health choices impacted the strength and resilience of my body long before a passing virus got a hold of me. While I didn't have specific foresight of what the exact health challenge was going to be at the onset of either retrograde, the striking recurrence of hospitalization was not surprising (Mars was also retrograde and transiting my 12 House and ASC in 2025) and in the case of 2017 (a Uranus opposition that was exact with numerous other challenges tied into the Venus Retrograde via eclipse as well). All of this highlighted the importance of being aware of personal cycles and valuing health above all else.
In 2025, the memory of the 2017 experience prompted me to prioritize my rest and consciously focus on practices that support my well-being like attending the health and wellness retreat and communicating with family, friends, and co-workers about what I was experiencing. These preemptive actions, informed by a past experience echoing a cyclical cosmic pattern, undoubtedly contributed to a more efficient recovery, reinforcing the idea that investing in our health yields the greatest returns.
This isn't about fatalism or believing that history will precisely repeat itself. Instead, it's about recognizing the meaningful cycles and patterns in our biography through the study of astrology. The lesson here for me was also about patterns of behavior in self-care and health and how that impacts everything else in my life. The amazing part is that through awareness we can make more informed decisions that can positively influence the outcome. By tuning into these rhythms, alongside a commitment to the six pillars of health we can empower ourselves to navigate life's challenges and health challenges with greater foresight and resilience.
The six pillars of health include:
a plant-based diet
physical activity
stress management
sleep
avoiding risky behaviors
cultivating supportive relationships
My experience serves as a powerful reminder that understanding our personal cycles, whatever their origin, is a valuable tool in proactively supporting our well-being, because ultimately, health is wealth.
